Alex Sofranko, Blog Group #4, Primary Source Summary

http://www.retronaut.co/2011/10/illustrated-coca-cola-ads-by-pete-hawley-1960s/

The first source is an illustration for Coca-Cola. In the illustration a very elegant redheaded woman in a bright green dress and pearl jewelry sits on a white couch with a golden bucket of Coca-Cola next to her. She is smiling widely with a bottle of Coca-Cola in her hand, as a man in a gray suit smiles back from the other side of the couch. The man in the gray suit is also holding a Coca-Cola. There is a man in a blue suit with a grin on his face as he checks out the scene on the couch from behind. In the background there is a couple leaning in towards each other also holding Coca-Colas and another couple standing close together, holding hands. All of the people in the illustration seem simply delighted to be where they are at with their Coca-Colas in hand. They all seem to be upper class considering their appearances. The woman in the green dress appears to be attracting quite a bit of attention to herself from mostly everyone in the room as she holds the Coca-Cola in her hand high up with pride.

The second source is a commercial for Axe Body Spray. The commercial begins in a crowded airport. A brown-haired man whom appears to be in his twenties wearing a blue dress shirt and khakis runs through the crowd. The fans on the ceiling spin quickly throughout the airport. The man, quite upset, sets off the security alarm as he tries to rush to catch his flight. The beginning of a rock song with guitar and drums plays as an attractive black-haired woman security guard in a form fitting uniform begins to scan him with a medal detector. The security woman gets close the man and inhales, looking up at his face and smiling. The aroma that the man was radiating attracts her. Others wait to pass through the security scanner with impatient looks. Spreading his arms wide apart, the man stands in frustration. The woman security guard goes behind him feeling his chest. She peers from behind him and he looks rather confused. The man appears to be sweating and the woman is experiencing a lot of pleasure. A fan spins behind them in the background. An older less attractive woman sitting at a desk with a telephone in front of her watches the scene, confused. The man smiles as the security woman continues to feel his body. At the end of the commercial a woman’s voice says, “The Axe-Effect… now bigger, with 30 mill’s free.” A man’s bare chest is shown applying Axe Body Spray to it and a variety of Axe canisters are also shown.

  1. Coca-Cola illustration:

I think you should mention that the bright colors of the ad center around the woman and where she is sitting(green dress, bright pillows, red hair). She is the center of attention for the ad. To me it seems like the man with the blue suit is also interested in the woman and is waiting his turn to converse. This puts the woman in a position where she will need to choose a partner as everyone else in the ad is partnered up. The woman's relaxed position on the couch and that she is only slightly encouraging the man on the couch to talk to her suggests that she is the one in control and since she has another suitor in the wings she has options.
Also, the couple in the background that is holding hands are actually dancing(I think).

    Axe commercial:

I think you should mention that at the end of the commercial there is a woman's hand that strokes the Axe canister in a slow, suggestive manner that makes the can grow. Also at the end of the touch there this a "Woo" that happens in the song that sounds like a man's voice. Also that while the security guard starts scanning him with the metal detector in the beginning she moves to use her hands to examine his body. This is way less professional and suggesting that personal space is being violated.

I think that the Axe commercial has more obvious ideas of sexuality and how woman are affected by the smell of a man. The Coca-Cola ad is also good in suggesting that women have choices and its not always up to the man to choose his partner.

  2. Coca-Cola

Maybe talk more about the red-haired woman and how she is the center of the ad. It seems that she has two men that are interested in her. Everyone else seems to be coupled off. Most of the background is white so that should be mentioned. I would also talk about the time era.

    Axe

I think you should talk more about how the security guard was stroking him in an inappropriate way and mention the color of her uniform. Also talk about how the Axe bottle grew when the woman said "bigger" and that there was a woman's hand with red nails touching the bottle at the end.

I thought both would be good choices but I like the Axe commerical more. I think it would fit in more with the course and I believe it would be easier to analyze. Both are fine though.

  3. Coca-Cola

I think the redheaded woman is the main point of the whole poster so that you should talk more about her. Because the pose of the woman and the man in gray suit are the first thing that people see in the poster, you should talk about what kind of condition their pose might be suggesting. And also the reaction of the man in blue suit is related to the redheaded woman.

    Axe
You should mention that the bottle of spray is changing size when the woman's sound says "bigger", and that the woman's hand with red nail is touching the bottle, and the red nail may be expressing some information to the audience.

I like the second ad and summary better. It clearly have relationship with our class's theme and there is much more to explore in this ad.
