Dong Kwon Yoo, Blog Group #3, Primary Source Summary

This is a commercial for Hyundai Motors Company. At the beginning of this advertisement, the men’s bodies appear, and it seems like an art performance. A number of the ballet dancers express something profoundly. And suddenly, the real performance begins under the fancy lighting. This performance is a form of making shadow pictures with many guys who wear pretty tight clothes. With flexible movement, dancers create or present some motions with their bodies such as music instruments, treadmill, an opera singer, and a primitive image. At the last, the dancers gather to express something which looks like huge and sturdy. After that, the body performance switches to the Hyundai’s brand new luxury car. I think this car commercial focus on the art performance which implies the flexible design of the car.

This advertisement is for Samsung smart phone, Galaxy S2. The commercial starts in New York City with many people who wait in the lines, also in other big cities in America. All the people in the line, they all are waiting for brand new iphone, and sometimes they say the feature or the design of the Iphone. Suddenly, woman on the bench appears with Galaxy S2. In other cities, people who hold Galaxy 2 also show up. Some people in the line gradually are interested in Galaxy S2, and even they compare the features and design of Galaxy and Iphone. They soon call the name of the brand, Samsung. After this, all the people who hold Galaxy S2 disappear, and a sentence comes up. What I felt about this commercial is the advertisement is pretty creative and satirical toward their rival, Apple. By comparing the Galaxy S2 with Iphone on the screen, they easily provide their strengths. Also, the last sentence gives pretty strong effect to consumers.

  1. For the first ad, I would talk about how you never really see what the performers are wearing; they are just black figures. How does each object that the dancers create relate to the car? This ad follows the class theme well because it makes art with the body. For the second ad, I would talk about what the people are wearing and what social class they seem to be in. How does this information relate to their ability to buy a phone? The ad does not really go with the theme of the class "Sex in Public".

  2. Good summaries. For the first ad, I would explain about that why ad shows the strong muscle from men’s bodies, and how it is related to the car. Moreover, strong men and slim women perform together during the advertisement, and their movement is very smooth. It is interesting that their behavior which is shown in the ad is relating to new luxury car.
For the second ad, I would go into more detail about people’s appearance, and what they are saying to Samsung now phone.

  3. Both of your summaries are solid. The first ad could use a little better organization. Putting the art shapes in order of appearance and writing how they relate to the advertised car would be a good idea. Also, you may want to compare the shapes and the car to the "Sexuality" topic. The second summary would be better if you were a little more specific. You could quote what people are saying in the ad and you could write about what the phones look like and how people react to them. Finally, the second ad does not seem to closely relate to the topic.
